Stats: 1989 Shelby CSX VNT #493 of 500
Mileage: 60, 000+
This Exotic Red CSX features the Turbo IV 2.2L I4, with Multi-port Fuel Injection. The Factory engine specifications are 175 hp @ 5200rpms, and 210 lbs-ft of torque @ 2400rpms. The first use of automotive carbon-fibre wheels (composites) was on this year CSX, Shelby called them "Fibrerides". The VNT was also a first for this year CSX, being a Variable-Nozzle Turbocharger, made by Garrett. It featured variable vanes (nozzles) that direct exhaust gas flow onto the impeller of the turbocharger, thereby eliminating the need for an extraneous wastegate, and controller. This all added up to some serious performance: 0-60 mph in 7.0 seconds. With a top speed of 134+ mph! This '89 Shelby CSX was built in Whittier, CA as an experimental performance vehicle in cooperation with the Chrysler Corporation. It was first delivered to a dealer in Minneapolis possibly for display in car shows and Fairs. I purchased it as a used vehicle with 150 miles in Oklahoma from a local Dodge dealer in March '90. It was driven daily from March '90 through August '95 for more than 60,000 miles. My best 1/4 mile pass is @ 15.3 @ 93MPH (street shifts little or no clutch slip). At this time no mods were made. I am a car collector. I have 2 Shelbys: this CSX (Carroll Shelby eXperimental). It is number 493 of 500, and I also have a 1985 GLH Turbo that I drive each day.
